Sam Long Takes the Iron(man) Throne
Sam Long – Boulder born, breaker of tapes, Big Unit and true athletic warrior – secured the Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga throne by winning his very first professional triathlon race on Sunday.
His day was one that he has been waiting for and working very hard towards for several years. His mis-hap at Oceanside and his near perfect race at St George helped to shape the day he delivered on Sunday.
Sam had a strong swim (25:26) and the fastest bike split for the day (2:04:06 - 27.5mph average), but with only a slim lead coming off the bike, it was his personal best run time of 1:15:22 (5:45 pace per mile) that solidified the victory.
If you follow Sam on social media or Strava, you see first-hand how hard this guy works. From 250-mile bike rides to leg smashing runs in the heat and freezing cold, Sam is one of the most focused and determined athletes we’ve had in our program.
Sam came to Team Sports Inc in 2016 as an amateur athlete. It was clear right away that Sam was a special athlete and with his outstanding performance in Hawaii at the Ironman World Championship along with other age group victories he quickly moved his way up to professional status. His story has been playing out for several seasons now and it was never a question of if he would translate all that hard work into a win, the question was when.
It is ironic that Game Of Thrones ended on a day when Sam Long - Boulder born, breaker of tapes, Big Unit and true athletic warrior – took the throne in Chattanooga.
